Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, the chief od Dubai Traffic Police, has called for a 10kph reductions on the speed limits across Dubai.

After Dubai Police figures showed almost two-thirds of the 1.2 million traffic offences in the first seven months of 2013 were caused by speeding, Al Zafeen made the call.

He said that any speed reduction plans are welcomed, after a similar initiative in Abu Dhabi where speed was reduced 20kph on motorways resulted in less speeding offences.

"Lowering the buffer over speed limits will lead to fewer accidents," Gen Al Zafeen said, "Ninety per cent of traffic accidents occur because of excess speed."

Most of the offenders were between the age of 18 and 36.

"Speeding costs society dearly in terms of human capital."
