Quick Review

Hyundai's 2013 Elantra (sold as the Avante in some regions) is powered by a new 130 -horsepower, 1.6-liter direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine. Also new for the 2013 model year is an updated exterior, bringing Hyundai's new "fluidic sculpture" design language to the Elantra.

The thing that sets the Elantra apart from other cars in the compact sedan segment is its phenomenal fuel efficiency. It offers an average of 6.7 L /100 km putting its head and shoulders above the competition. Fuel efficiency compares especially well with the Toyota Corolla and very favorably with Honda Civic. It even tops the notably efficient Mazda3. The spacious and comfortable interior is another point in its favor against some rivals, such as Honda. The car looks nice, too, pleasingly swept and fluid at the front and with a sleek, aerodynamic profile that's slightly futuristic.

The Elantra strikes a balance between compactness and comfort. It isn't as tiny as its super-mini baby brother, the Getz, but is still more compact than the Sonata sedan. All-in-all, the Elantra is definitely an intriguing option for the eco-aware and budget-conscious shopper who wants an efficient family-friendly ride with plenty of safety features.

Gains in efficiency don't necessarily mean a disappointing drop in performance, with the 143-horsepower engine delivering a respectable amount of torque. It's a particularly smooth drive, with vibration control that keeps the cabin comfortable, as well as very effective noise dampening for an impressively quiet ride.
