Ever since the Taycan was launched, petrolheads all around the world were prepared for it to be a Porsche vs Tesla battle, not for sales, but for whoever breaks the EV record round the famous Nurburgring.

And since then the mantle for the record has been shifting like the pendulum with the pre-production Porsche Taycan Turbo setting the record at the hands of driver Lars Kern in 2019, only for it to be broken by the Tesla Model S Plaid in September 2021.

Now, Porsche has reclaimed the crown with a Porsche Taycan Turbo S equipped with a new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) lapping the Green Hell in just 7 minutes and 33 seconds and beating the Tesla’s earlier lap time by 2 seconds. Close, but still a mind-boggling record.

The performance kit meant the record-breaking Taycan Turbo S had 21 inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, sports seats, a roll cage and a software updated Porsche 4D Chassis Control. This performance kit can be bought by buyers of the 2023 Porsche Taycan S for an extra premium of €13,377 (around 50,251 AED).

“In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range,” says Porsche development driver Lars Kern who drove the car. “With the new performance kit I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot.”

Kevin Giek, Vice President Model Line Taycan, said: “We’re delighted that the Nürburgring record for electric cars is back in Porsche hands. This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan.”
