Brief history: The GLE class is basically the ML class launched by Mercedes-Benz to capture the SUV market. The SUV was launched in the late 90s to give rise to the premium SUV segment and then a while later AMG took the SUV into its hands and created the ML55 AMG. This was a purpose built hot-rod version of the regular ML to please the sports car enthusiast in the SUV owner. Well, decades later, the ML brand has been renamed as the GLE and we get to test drive the GLE63 S.

Exterior

The GLE received a facelift for the 2016 model with the addition of new front fenders, headlamps and taillamps. The front overall looks a bit different but the rest of the car remains the same. I personally like the black AMG alloys – though they are heavily prone to scratches so keep that in mind. In totality, the GLE63 looks like a Merc and it justifies the beastly performance by having those beastly looks to compliment. To me, the looks are not that attractive as I prefer the styling of the Cayenne but hey, the GLE stands out in the crowd.

Interior & Safety

The interior of the GLE is like any other Merc. The seats are firm, ride is smooth, interior cabin has a dash of leather and soft touch materials everywhere. The steering has a bit of alcantara on it for extra grip. I personally don’t like the screen popping out. Merc needs to either have a retractable system or make it like BMW – part of the dash. Other than that, it is pretty much standard Merc kitting. Overall, it is a same nice feeling you get in a Merc.

Drive

The GLE63S is powered by a twin-turbo V8 producing 577 BHP and a monstrous 760 Nm of torque. This S variant produces 27 BHP and 60 Nm more than the regular AMG variant. This means 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds till the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The engine is mated to a 7 speed automatic gearbox and all-time AWD system. Add to that, the glorious exhaust note and you have a serious beast in your hands. However, this means the fuel economy will be not so friendly. Our test car gave about 21 l/100 km. AMG fitted the GLE with adaptive suspension for your driving needs and the Sport+ mode really gives it the sports car feel. You will forget that it is an SUV as there is very little body roll and the grippy tires add to the whole experience. Overall, the GLE drives like any other performance sedan out there.

Verdict

The GLE63S is for a niche segment. It gives you the Cayenne performance without the Porsche brand. Also, the GLE Coupe is also there so this segment is becoming crowded. However, this is a nice alternative to your regular Cayenne.
