Toyota, informally known as the maker of the world’s most reliable vehicles, has had itself imbued in the precincts of racing for several decades. Building cars which are the paragon examples of immaculate fit and finish, dependability and impeccable in terms of acceleration and twirling, Toyota has not only achieved some surreal feats along its journey, but also garnered insights to stir a direction towards building quintessential cars that considered race track as sacred and their habitat.

Greater mettle and feistiness were instilled in the brand when it aggregated all its motorsport activities into the bumbershoot of a division that exclusively catered to racing development christened Gazoo Racing (GR). This aided the brand in overthrowing several of its contemporaries in the array encapsulating Formula 1, Rally Championships and Endurance races.

The GR division of the brand had a reason to get exalted as it recently added one more accolade to its compendium of achievements by acquiring bragging rights for double podium finishes at Rally Finland. This had the brand leap to increase Toyota Manufacturer’s Championship’s lead to 88 points. The car which crowned them with this status is the brand’s stubby rocket, the GR Yaris Rally 1 Hybrid Electric vehicle and the ace driver, Kalle Rovanperä who bagged the 2nd incumbent while his colleague, Finn Esapekka Lappi shared the dais with him standard with hubris on the block marked ‘3.’

The astonishing moments took place in the Finnish city Jyväskylä, touted as the domiciling place for the brouhaha-laden sport of rallying. The two couples, Rovanperä and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen and Lappi and his co-pilot Janne Ferm scud through the challenging and scrawny tarmac in their No.69 and No.4 Toyota Yaris, respectively to plunge the record with swiftest time in 15 of 22 stages. Adding to their driving and handling prowess, Rovanperä also earned 5 bonus points for his ferocious gait to clinch to 94 points while 5 rally races were yet to be conducted. The other duo won with flying colours to gain their second podium of the season.

Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, commented: “This year there are two home rallies for us, and Rally Finland was the first one of them. The whole team, especially the local heroes, Rovanperä and Lappi, tried very hard and did well, pushing to the limit and beyond. We received great support from fans and the city of Jyväskylä. I would like to thank everyone for that. I’m sure we will have huge support as well at Rally Japan, which is our other home rally. The team will continue working hard together, and we will definitely respond to their cheers and return the favor with victory.”

The Motorsport events underscore an important position in Toyota’s operations as it not only helps them build unfaltering cars for the track, but even for the road. This is also owing to their belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars.’ Warping the experience of the melange of years that the Japanese conglomerate has been in this zesty ambit, it has allowed them to build consummate track weapons that could be friendly in the regular milieu and conditions to democratise the sheer frolic of driving, independence, adventure and thrill to the masses.

The most recent rally event where the brand partook was the Ypres Rally Belgium inaugurated on the 19th August and lasted till the 21st which for the maiden time, commenced in a WRC syntax in 2021. This rally was pivotal for the brand as it is highly regarded as a venerable and challenging form of rally championship with the apparent traits of slender rutted path overlooking farmlands on both sides and large ditches that could leave even a highly dexterous driver in trepidation.

The UAE has been witness to some of the models coming from the stables of the brand’s TRD and GR divisions and the conjecture that Toyota is likely to expand its penetration into racing only alludes to ground-breaking and better-than-ever products for the public.
