An overview of the BMW 5 Series 2019

The mid-size luxury sedan buyer is perhaps one of the hardest ones to please as this wealthy clientele tend to carry big expectations before signing on the dotted line for their dream purchase. The minimum prerequisites include luxury, performance, a sophisticated design, modern technology, and trustworthy safety. The BMW 5-Series made its debut all the way back in 1972 and since then, has gone on to become the longest-running model in the Bavarian brand’s lineup. Spanning over 45 years in constant development and successful production, the 5er is one of the most highly regarded cars in its segment. Currently in its seventh generation, the 2019 BMW 5-Series takes the fight to the other segment champions such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Jaguar XF, and Cadillac CT6.

Exterior

Taking some cues from its more expensive 7er sibling, the exterior design of the 2019 BMW 5-Series incorporates many of the former’s elegant and sporty aspects, thus resulting in a more aerodynamic, striking, and aggressive looking 5er than before. The front fascia features a large, sweeping hood, protruding kidney grille with active aero shutters, sophisticated LED headlights with DRLs, and a svelte bumper.

The streamlined and well-contoured side gets a short front overhang, subtly flared fenders, and posh 19-inch alloy rims. The suave rear features a large boot, modern 3D-design LED taillights, and a beefy bumper with dual-exhaust outlets. The new 5-Series is surely a looker and since it is larger than its predecessor, its attractive proportions make it even more appealing. Speaking of which, the 2019 BMW 5-Series measures 4.962 meters in length, 1.868 meters in width, 1.467 meters in height, and has a 2.975-meter wheelbase. The overall boot capacity of the new 5er has been increased to a roomy 530 liters.

Interior

The cabin of the new 2019 BMW 5-Series now offers slightly more room than its predecessor, and the German carmaker has also upped the ante on quality. Just as in the flagship 7-Series, the materials used are top-notch, so is the level of build and fit and finish. All the components and trim surfaces feel premium and of high grade, as they should be for the price and segment. The 5er has a driver-oriented dash and control surface layout, along with supportive yet cozy, leather-clad seats that are great.

The new 2019 5-Series is teeming with high-tech features such as adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering, LCD instrument cluster, gesture control, adaptive mood lighting, smart touchscreen key fob, a 10.25-inch high-res touch-infotainment display, head-up display, automatic four-zone climate control with fragrance infusion, seat massagers etc. Equally impressive is the new 5er’s safety gizmos that includes an advanced airbag system with up to 10 airbags, active headrests, dynamic stability and traction control, collision detection, and blind-spot and lane departure assist, to name a few.

Engine and performance

The 2019 BMW 5-Series is available with four, six, and eight-cylinder engines that come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive as standard, though all-wheel drive is available across all variants. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot and 3.0-liter straight-six units make 252 HP with 350 Nm and 340 HP with 450 NM, respectively. Meanwhile, the 462-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8 whips out 650 Nm of torque, enabling the M550i to hit 100 km/h in four seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Verdict

Prices for the 2019 BMW 5-Series range between AED 315,000 and AED 435,000, while insurance costs start at AED 7,088 for the base 530i.
