There's something about a Jaguar. Something special. They ooze refinement and heritage and yet a model like this not only stirs something in your soul; it ignites your passion for driving and rewards your faith in its world-beating technology with an experience that few other cars on the road can match.

Driving Performance

The breathtaking XFR is Jaguar’s quickest, most powerful sports saloon yet. We drove the fully-loaded 5.0L V8 supercharged variant and the one thing it did most consistently was take our breath away.

It can hit 100km an hour in a shade under five seconds and is easily capable of the electronically limited 250km per hour top speed.

With a staggering 550PS of snarling power under the hood, make no mistake about it, this is an extremely powerful car. Just plant your right foot and you’ll feel the brute force of the Jag’s effortless acceleration and yet treat it with respect and you have a driving experience that’s smoother than a Starbucks’ double-smooth mocca chocca latte.

But just important as the power that launches you to breakneck speeds is the car’s stopping power and Jaguar’s Advanced Braking System guarantees safe and comfortable braking in a wide variety of conditions.

The suspension set-up feels sporty enough to be fun to drive along a twisting, winding back road, but it’s equally at home on the highways. The bottom line is that XFR enjoys being pushed - grip is immense and the handling is so responsive and enjoyable, it feels like you’re playing a video game.

Interior

You can tell the XFR has spent a good bit of development time in the wind tunnel. The boffins have sculpted a car that cuts through the air like a dart and has the kind of aesthetic appeal that only a supercar conveys. Extensive aerodynamic tweaks like the deep front bumper with carbon fibre splitter, and a raft of other carbon fibre additions come together to reduce lift by 68% but also give the car a ruthless, sporting appearance.

Jaguar’s eight-speed ‘Quickshift’ transmission facilitates smooth and lightning-fast gear changes throughout the range - in fact changes take just 200 milliseconds, which is faster than even a professional racing driver can manage. Plus, there’s added functionality of multi-down-shifting, meaning you can switch from fifth gear to second, without having to drop down through the gears as with most semi-automatic gearboxes.

On a practical note, the rear legroom could be better, particularly if you have five adults to transport but if you want a people carrier, you don’t buy one of these. The trunk space is far from being best in class but there’s enough capacity for everyday use. The XFR is the kind of four-seater grand tourer that you could happily drive from one end of the country to the other with your family, and yet it doubles as a driving machine you can really enjoy when you’ve dropped off your passengers.

Verdict

Despite its love of speed, this is a car you can drive every day. But it’s not the sort of vehicle that will be happy just coasting to and from the supermarket. This is a car for enthusiasts and power mongers and it simply longs to be driven. Everyone else can buy a Camry and be happy with it!
